Student Academic Services/Lane Ave. Parking Garage

Location: The Ohio State University Columbus, Ohio

Completed: 2010

The Student Academic Services building (SAS) / Lane Avenue Parking Garage (LAPG) marks a primary north gateway to The Ohio State University. Thousands of students, staff, faculty, and visitors drive and walk past this site every day.

Formerly a 400-car surface parking lot, the building’s organization at the corner of Lane Avenue and Tuttle Park Place posed numerous design challenges. Early in the conceptual design process it was clear that connecting SAS and LAPG would provide significant advantages.  The paired building is more compact on the limited acreage site.

The 300 ft long by 70 ft deep SAS building is oriented to the north. Large window fenestration provides an open, light-filled office environment, without glare. LAPG is located to the south. The concrete garage structure shades the offices on SAS’s long south wall and provides a large daytime heat sink to warm the offices at night.  The garage also provides direct access to the SAS office building. Protection from Ohio weather is a rare and treasured relationship of parking-to-workplace on campus.

Dramatic, scarlet-hued night lighting brands and illuminates the Lane Avenue Parking Garage, making it a visible landmark seen as far west as the Olentangy River.
